How to Shift a Split AC When Moving House

To shift a split AC when you move house, a technician first pumps the gas back into the outdoor unit, then disconnects the pipes and wiring and removes both units from the wall. The units travel upright and well padded, and at the new home they are mounted, connected, vacuumed, leak tested and switched on. Done properly, the AC usually keeps its gas. Pulled off the wall without a pump-down, it often needs a gas refill and repairs.

Why ACs Need Special Care When You Move

A split AC is two units joined by copper pipes that carry refrigerant gas. If the pipes are simply cut or unscrewed, that gas escapes. Bent pipes, a cracked indoor panel or a compressor that was laid on its side can also mean expensive repairs at the new home.

Step 1: Pump Down the Gas

With the AC running in cooling mode, the technician closes the service valves on the outdoor unit in the right order. This pulls the refrigerant into the outdoor unit and seals it there. Only then are the pipes disconnected and the ports capped.

Step 2: Uninstall Both Units

  • Switch off and disconnect the power.
  • Remove the indoor unit from its wall plate and disconnect the drain pipe.
  • Disconnect the copper pipes and wiring, and cap the pipe ends so no dust or moisture gets in.
  • Unbolt the outdoor unit from its bracket and lift it down carefully.
  • Keep the remote, screws and wall plate together in a labelled bag.

Step 3: Pack and Move

  • Wrap the indoor unit in bubble wrap, with extra padding on the front panel.
  • Keep the outdoor unit upright in the truck and secure it so it cannot tip.
  • Do not stack heavy boxes on either unit.

Step 4: Reinstall at the New Home

  1. Choose positions with good airflow for the outdoor unit and a sensible pipe route.
  2. Fix the wall plate and outdoor bracket securely.
  3. Connect the copper pipes, wiring and drain pipe.
  4. Vacuum the lines to remove air and moisture.
  5. Leak test the joints, then open the valves to release the gas.
  6. Switch on and check the cooling.

Before You Move: Things to Check

  • Warranty: some AC warranties do not cover units moved to a new location, or need the brand’s own technician. Check your warranty card first.
  • Pipe length: if the new room needs a longer pipe run, extra copper pipe and insulation may be needed.
  • Electrical supply: make sure the new room has a suitable socket or breaker for the AC.
  • Brackets: old brackets can be rusty. A new outdoor bracket is often worth it.

Common AC Shifting Mistakes

  • Cutting the pipes without pumping down the gas
  • Laying the outdoor unit flat in the truck
  • Leaving pipe ends open to dust and moisture
  • Skipping the vacuum and leak test at reinstallation
  • Using untrained labour instead of an AC technician

Plan ACs Into Your Moving Day

Book the AC uninstall for the day before or the morning of the move, and the reinstall for the day you arrive. That way the units are not left lying around. Add it to your house shifting checklist, and if you are getting quotes, ask whether AC work is included, as explained in our guide to house shifting charges.

AC Shifting FAQs

Does a split AC lose gas when it is shifted?

Not if the gas is pumped down into the outdoor unit before the pipes are disconnected. If the pipes are simply cut, the gas is lost and the AC will need a refill.

Can movers shift my AC?

Many moving companies, including us, offer AC uninstallation and reinstallation. Make sure it is done by someone trained in AC work, not general labour.

Should the outdoor unit be transported upright?

Yes. Keep the outdoor unit upright and secured so the compressor and its oil stay in place.

How long does it take to shift a split AC?

Uninstalling and reinstalling a standard split AC usually takes a few hours in total, longer if the new position needs a long pipe run or a difficult outdoor mounting.

Will moving my AC affect the warranty?

It can. Some brands do not cover units moved to a new address, or require their own technician. Check the warranty card before the move.
